Definition

A website defacement is when an attacker **alters the visual appearance or content of a website without permission**, usually replacing the normal page with their own message, image, or code.

It’s the digital equivalent of spray-painting graffiti on a storefront — the attacker is making a public statement, showing off, or delivering a threat. The changes are often meant to embarrass the site owner, push political or ideological views, or simply demonstrate that the attacker was there.

Defacements can be:

* **Political (“Hacktivism”)** – Posting slogans or propaganda to promote a cause
* **Personal (“Digital Tagging”)** – Bragging rights among hacking communities
* **Malicious** – Replacing content with scams, malware links, or offensive material

From an investigation standpoint, defacement is a clear sign of a **web server compromise**. Common entry points include:

* Exploiting a vulnerable content management system (CMS) plugin or theme
* Uploading malicious files via insecure forms or file upload features
* Using stolen admin credentials
* Exploiting misconfigured permissions or outdated software

A defacement investigation often involves:

1. Capturing a copy of the defaced page for evidence
2. Checking web server logs for unusual file changes or uploads
3. Identifying the source of the intrusion (vulnerable plugin, stolen password, etc.)
4. Restoring clean backups
5. Patching the vulnerability to prevent repeat attacks

Real-world example – In 2020, multiple websites in Georgia, USA, were defaced during a political conflict, displaying propaganda messages tied to foreign actors. Another famous case was the 2013 Syrian Electronic Army defacing major media outlets to spread political statements.
