Definition

Lateral movement is the stage in a cyberattack where an attacker, after getting an initial foothold in a network, **moves from one system to another** to expand their access, gather more credentials, and get closer to their real targets (like sensitive data or critical systems).

Instead of staying on the first compromised machine, the attacker pivots — much like a burglar sneaking from room to room once inside a building — looking for valuable “rooms” (servers, databases, privileged accounts).

Common methods attackers use for lateral movement include:

* **Using stolen credentials** to log in to other systems (e.g., RDP, SSH)
* **Pass-the-Hash / Pass-the-Ticket** attacks to reuse authentication tokens
* **Remote service execution** (e.g., `PsExec`, Windows Management Instrumentation, WinRM)
* **Exploiting network shares** to drop and run malware on other hosts
* **Abusing legitimate admin tools** (Living off the Land) like PowerShell remoting

Why it matters in investigations:

* Lateral movement often happens before **data theft** or **ransomware deployment**.
* Detecting it early can stop attackers before they reach critical systems.
* Unusual authentication patterns, new service creations, or tools like `psexec.exe` showing up in logs are strong red flags.

If you see one compromised workstation suddenly initiating RDP sessions to multiple servers at odd hours, that’s a possible sign of lateral movement.

Real-world examples:

* **NotPetya (2017)** spread rapidly through corporate networks using stolen credentials and Windows management tools.
* **Ryuk ransomware** operators often spend days moving laterally through networks before detonating ransomware on multiple high-value servers at once.
* **APT29** has been observed using lateral movement to access email servers after compromising initial endpoints.
