Influence operations (often shortened to **influence ops**) are **coordinated efforts to shape public perception, sway opinions, or influence behavior**, usually for political, ideological, or strategic gain.

They can be run by governments, political groups, activist organizations, or even criminal networks — sometimes openly, sometimes covertly. In the cyber context, influence ops often blend **information warfare** and **digital marketing tactics**, but with the goal of manipulating rather than informing.

Common techniques include:

* **Disinformation** – Spreading false information deliberately.

* **Amplification** – Boosting certain narratives using bots, fake accounts, or coordinated posting.

* **Memes and viral media** – Using humor or emotion to make messages spread quickly.

* They can be part of election interference, corporate sabotage, or geopolitical campaigns.
* Attackers may combine influence ops with hacking — for example, **hack-and-leak** operations, where stolen documents are selectively released to support a narrative.
* Tracking influence ops requires blending **cyber threat intelligence** with **open-source intelligence (OSINT)**, social media monitoring, and behavioral analysis.
