hostname
Hostname
Security Concepts
Definition
A hostname is the name given to a computer or device on a network. It helps people and systems identify which machine is which. Instead of referring to a device by an IP address that is hard to remember, a hostname provides a simple label such as `Server-01` or `MarketingPC`. Hostnames are used in many places: * Logs show which computer an event happened on * Security tools track where alerts come from * IT teams assign names to keep machines organized * Websites use hostnames as part of their domain names **Example** If a log entry shows: ``` hostname: DC01 ``` That means the event happened on a computer named “DC01”, which might be a Domain Controller inside the network.
