Learning at camp

What students will learn

Students practice critical thinking, data analysis, and communication by solving mysteries together. These skills carry into any discipline, whether or not they choose a future in cybersecurity.

Critical thinking

Students ask questions, challenge assumptions, and compare evidence. They practice explaining why a conclusion makes sense.

Data analysis

Students find patterns in realistic data and learn a query language to search for clues. They connect what they find on screen with evidence gathered through activities.

Communication

Students listen to teammates, discuss different explanations, and present their findings. They learn to make a clear case for their ideas.

Activities

How camp works

Camp combines movement, conversation, puzzles, and time with data. Students spend part of the day at a laptop and part away from it, gathering clues and working with others.

Guided activities help students get started, then give them room to test ideas and solve problems together. Activities and schedules will vary by camp.

Get to know the KC7 approach
  1. Students explore a mystery

Students get moving, interview witnesses in a fictional case, and gather clues through hands-on activities.

  2. Students investigate together

Teams compare clues, discuss possibilities, and use a query language to search data. The computer is one tool in a larger investigation.

  3. Students explain what they found

Students bring their evidence together and present their conclusions, practicing clear communication and learning from one another.

The people behind camp

What is the KC7 Foundation?

The KC7 Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit that makes cybersecurity learning accessible to more people. We help students discover an interest they might never have considered, through games, mysteries, and hands-on experiences.

Our volunteers, educators, and supporters make free camps like these possible. Students get a welcoming place to explore, build confidence, and develop skills they can use wherever their interests take them.

Who is this camp for?

This camp is for students who are curious and enjoy figuring things out. They don’t need an existing interest in computers or any technical experience. We welcome inquisitive students with all kinds of interests.

Does my child need to know how to code?

No prior coding or cybersecurity experience is needed to start with KC7. Students learn by asking questions and following evidence, with guided practice to help them get started. Each camp’s age and grade requirements will be shared with registration.

What will students learn?

Students practice critical thinking, data analysis, and communication. They evaluate evidence, find patterns in data, and explain their findings to others. These skills transfer to any discipline, whether or not students go on to study or work in cybersecurity.

Will my child spend the whole day at a computer?

No. This is a mystery camp: students move around, talk with others, question witnesses in fictional cases, and work through hands-on puzzles. They also use a query language to explore data on a laptop, as one part of their investigation.

Will students be hacking real systems?

KC7’s games use fictional organizations and realistic activity records. Students investigate what happened from a defender’s perspective; the cases do not ask them to break into real systems.

What about laptops, meals, and pickup?

We provide laptops and meals at camp. Please make sure your child has breakfast before arriving and is dropped off on time. We’ll share daily hours and drop-off and pickup instructions before camp. Please contact us about dietary or accessibility needs.

How do we sign up, and what does it cost?

Camp is completely free, including laptops to use at camp and meals. Registration links and eligibility details will be posted here when each camp’s arrangements are confirmed. For now, use the Louisville inquiry link above or contact the KC7 team. An inquiry does not reserve a place.
